081: Brian Cook, Rebecca Scott and José Rodriguez, of Panda Riot

It's almost one month to the day until Panda Riot's new album, "Northern Automatic Music" (St. Marie Records) drops, and here in episode 081 of Notes and Bolts, we're hanging out with band members Brian Cook, Rebecca Scott, and José Rodriguez to talk about the process of having put it to tape, along with the pyramid fever surging through the air at the moment. Listen in to hear the album's new single 'Black Pyramids' as well as three new tracks unheard anywhere else and debuting first, on this episode (one of which will be appearing on flexi-disc next month shortly after the album's release, courtesy of us here at N+B!)

Panda Riot - Amanda In The Clouds
B: This is the1st track off our new record Northern Automatic Music.
I think Rebecca came up with Vocal melodies while playing around with a looper pedal.
R: This is actually a song that we wrote a long time ago and it has undergone several changes. It’s named after our friend Amanda who is really cool and crazy.
J: Every time I listen to this track, it reminds me of waking up to a warm summer breeze.

Tricky - Ponderosa
B: Too much to say about this one. Way way too good.

Panda Riot - Black Pyramids
B: Started building guitar pedals for this song, especially the intro..the pedal is a secret
R: This song is probably the one that was the biggest struggle to write. It started off as a completely different song and we changed literally every part of it piece by piece until it became a totally new song. We love the new version and are so glad that we were finally able to get it right. It’s really fun to play because it is so energetic.

Led Byrd - Dragon #1
B: This is a side project of Mary Timony and Ash Bowie of Helium called Led Byrd. The only ever put out 2 songs, but I love them so much!

R.E.M. - Wolves, Lower
B: Early R.E.M. is nothing like you’d except and its magical stuff. I believe this track is from the Chronic Town EP

Digable Planets - 9th Wonder
B: There’s so much to say about Digable Planets! But I guess we’ll just keep it at we like them a lot.

Dawn - I'm Afraid They're All...
B: This track is from the compilation One Kiss Can Lead to Another. At the time there were tons of Phil Spector-ish girl groups recording songs like this. I like this one because its way more intense and strange then anything else on the comp.

Panda Riot - Camden Line
B: I was playing guitar while listening to some old hip hop songs. Started playing this guitar part over some of the drum beats and thats how the verse was made. Then had Jose play some drum parts, listened back to the parts, chopped up the drums and made some new parts. This song is also uses a $20 guitar set to really weird made up tunings.
R: Also, the drums for this song are influenced by the Digable Planets. It’s a good example of how we draw from influences other than shoegaze bands.

Panda Riot - Good Night, Rich Kids
R: This song is really fun because it has the most attitude. Although it’s not really my (Rebecca’s) personality to be tough, I have that side of myself and it was fun to take on that persona for this song.
